Research
My research is focussed on water and environmental policy, on public policy and political communication. I study the interaction (between and within) of institutions at various spatial levels, how political and administrative cultures influence forms of organisation, and how institutions and organisations often come in conflict with each other. Another important aspect of my work is the role of institutions in the formulation and implementation of policies, and how public and stakeholder participation can be improved. I work together with natural scientists, hydrologists, engineers, lawyers, economists and others who see the need for an integrated approach to environmental problems. For the next two years I will be coordinating a large EU funded research project on biodiversity and livelihoods, LiveDiverse (www.livediverse.eu). LiveDiverse has 8 partners in Europe, Vietnam, Costa Rica, South Africa and India. We will be studyting the interaction of livelihoods and biodiversity, and formulating scenarios and recommendations for policy and management.
My latest publications are:
