M.Sc. Sociology of Industry and Business Management, 1983. Erasmus University Rotterdam, NL
Background/Limited CV
Leo Baas (1946) has a Master of Science in Sociology of Industry and Management with a Specialization in Environmental Sciences and a Ph.D. in Social Sciences, covering the Dynamic Aspects of the Introduction and Dissemination of New Concepts in Industrial Practice. Cleaner Production and Industrial Ecology represent the new concepts in the Ph.D. thesis.
He started his career in industry in personnel and organizational management. After being the liaison between the citizen’s association and the government about solving the problems that citizens met through living on contaminated soil, he changed his job to scientific researcher and lecture of environmental issues. He was working at the Erasmus centre on Sustainability and Management (ESM) at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the period April 1986 – August 2009.
He has performed research on cleaner production since 1988 and on industrial ecology since 1994. He has been a member of the daily board of the European Roundtable on Cleaner Production in the period 1994 – 2003 and is a lifetime member of the International Association of Cleaner Technology. He is an advisor of the UNEP/UNIDO National Cleaner Production Centers Program since 1994, a member of UNEP’s High Level Expert Forum on Sustainable Consumption and Production since 1997, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the National Cleaner Production Centres in Latin America and the Caribbean since 2005. He was a member of the Strategy platform of the long-term program Sustainable Enterprises in the Rotterdam Harbour and Industry Complex in the Netherlands.
During his advisory work for UNIDO including regional development assessments in Mexico, Mid-America, South-Africa and Zimbabwe, he broadened the advisory on industry structure rationalization on the basis of cleaner production into “Sustainable Communities Scenarios” on the basis of sustainable development in regional economic planning strategies. The approach is based on a stakeholders’ learning community platform with representatives from government, industry and knowledge institutes.
In the recent phase at ESM, he was the Director of the International Off-Campus Ph.D. Program on Cleaner Production, Cleaner Products, Industrial Ecology & Sustainability, and the Coordinator of the Social Science Track of the Inter-University M.Sc. Industrial Ecology (in co-operation with Delft University of Technology and Leiden University).
He is the author of many publications on cleaner production and industrial ecology and is frequently invited to give lectures all over the world. He is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Cleaner Production and the International Journal on Performability Engineering.
He is Professor in Industrial Ecology at the Linköping University since 1 May 2009.
